February 22, 2022

On July 23, 2014 on my birthday at Mayhem festival, I saw this masked man for the very first time. Yes apart of a different band but still very captivating with his stage presents. This article is about Jeffrey Nothing and the man behind the mask. With any song that is led by Jeffrey you can not mistake his voice and feeling behind each lyric. I must say I will never forget the first and last time I saw him live. His energy, mystery on stage and his music is in a class of it's own.  From the latest release in the fall of 2021 "Confined" is a rendition of this very measure. The way it goes from slow memorizing feelings to hard cord anger and pain. The music and words behind it fits perfectly together. Before this release in the summer of 2021 was "The Outage", which I will admit I still can not get enough of! This song is one of his most catchy beats and classic Jeffrey Nothing feel I missed! I hope to hear a lot more in the near future, and I'm sure will not disappoint! I can say this music keeps getting better and better through time. His last full album I would like to add in 2011 "The New Psychodalia" is amazing with many colors of rhythms. It goes from a blues feel of "Psychodalia" with one of the slower song to a faster way to say "Goodbye" with a deeper message behind to a groovier sound like "Enough".  Definitely should give the album a listen to get the full prism of rhythm that Nothing puts into this one. In 2018 Nothing released the two songs that hit close to home for me and got me through the darkness that I was feeling at the time! Brought to light the reasons I started this Magazine! The songs titled "Fragile Mind" and "Dead Space/Dead Inside" both spoke volumes to the soul! They also made it to Music Guru pick list and lyrics on another page. I thank you for your words that gave me the strength to fight to get out of the grave I was stuck in! As you continue to do so now! I also thank you so much for connecting with me and doing this interview. Means more than you ever know! Kudos to you Jeffrey Nothing and can't wait to see you once more live! Hopefully able to see you face to face and shake the hand to Nothing!

Written by Jennifer Cook/Phoenix Ravenmoon the \M/usic Guru

But enough about my feelings on the subject lets get the interview and hear it straight from Nothing!

Interview Questions for Jeffrey Nothing

1. Let's start with please tell me more about your history as a Musician?

I have sang for as long as I can remember.

In the basement mirror with a hairbrush for a microphone at around 6 years old.

Screaming along to 45s in my garage with the neighborhood kids. Singing and attempting to play Kiss songs on bass with my friends, both named Mike on drums and guitar.  At around 21, my buddy's band was playing to me huge show at the time and I sang “Oh Well” by Fleetwood Mac and covered by the Rods. I was hooked and soon after joined local hard rock cover band Hard Driver. Weeks later I sat in at a rehearsal with a local metal band called Easterly. We later became NI4NI. After singing with a band in New Orleans called White Heat, I returned home, NI4NI became Purgatory. After around 5 years I started my solo band called Hatrix and along the way we evolved into Mushroomhead. Jeffrey Nothing had our 1st release in 2011 and was reborn in 2018.

2. Can you tell me more about your latest releases and projects going on right now?

My band Jeffrey Nothing has released a couple videos over the last half year for the songs “The Outage” and “Confined” both made in house. Directed by co vocalist Ian D. Music by fellow former Mushroomhead member guitarist Thomas Church as well as drummer Noah “Shark” Robertson formerly of Motograter and bassist Steven Adams. The songs are a great release and are positive messages. We are looking to spend some time together in a studio and knock out a full Album from our double album worth of material. Freedom in music is such a different, Long missed feeling. I am so looking forward to creating and releasing more.

3. Will we be seeing an full length album from you?

It is in the works. Very much a huge priority.  The band isn’t all in one place and travel and studio space are very big factors in our moving forward with this.

4. So far what is your most favorite song of your own thus far?

“Fragile Mind” because it truly speaks to the situation I left and says everything that needed to be said at that time and it was also a huge departure from the formula I was in. 1 that to me became predictable and suffocating. Music much like any art is a personal release. Not something managed by others thoughts especially in a band you co founded and in many ways, created.

5. I must say seeing you perform live is amazing to watch! You give us your all and it shows! Will we be able to see you perform and is there live dates?

I truly love recording the most but live is such a huge part of any band. Thanks… it means so much. Going thru the motions was never an option to me as far as being on stage. No matter the size of the crowd or how I was feeling, people buy tickets and deserve your all. With the pandemic seemingly losing steam and “Falseci” saying is nearing an end. I hope that things can come to a new normal and shows and touring and interacting with fans is fully back and vibrant once again.

6. I really love the song "Confined" you've released in 2021! What is the story behind it?

Thanks again and prisons can be a state of mind as much as the physical version of being behind bars. Surviving can be anything but a given and making a difference in this life can seem impossible. Wanting more for yourself and others can be so freeing. It starts with standing up and leading others to the light.

7. In the past I loved to watch you with Waylon, Church and Schmotz! All I'll say is you guys made it the best and there's a hole where you guys were! With that said and all I'll say! I saw rumors that Waylon and you are doing something together! Can you tell us any future plans? Any hints at least? Anything like all you guys together again in a group setting?

Never say never but the group of guys involved in anything I am willing to be a part of is quite short. We left for different, but similar reasons and tho I am close to a few people from the past.

There are some I will never work with again. A band should never become about us and  them. That one became him and everybody else.

8. As a musician what is your deepest love in music and the experiences you've had so far?

The music we are making now and just that I have been blessed to do this since I was 21. Truly living the dream. But my all time favorite is the day I performed at our Church, Cathedral of Life in North Ridgeville Ohio. With Anthony Greve formerly of Pop Evil who is now an evangelist. Sandra Payne Miller the Church’s worship leader and daughter of the Pastors: Mike and Loreen Payne. Mark Hart, Lee Anderson, Lee, Tonya and Ryan Moore and Naomi Reynolds. just a renowned group of musicians it was truly incredible. But my absolute favorite part was that I shared the stage with my Wife Stacy Hatrix.  We did “Jesus Freak” by DC Talk and I wouldn’t trade that moment for anything.

9. Any thing you'd like to say to the fans?

Be anything that you want to be. Dream it and do it. Put your soul into whatever you choose and God willing you will get there and it really is the best feeling.

10. Last question and this is the chance to add anything I didn't say already!?

Thank You so much for this opportunity and I hope that this new year finds everyone feeling a little more as 1. Not divided, connected. Community is a huge factor in mankind moving forward. Let’s leave all of the drama to the ridiculously over dramatic.

Care. It is easier to smile than it is to frown. To say “How are you?”  And not because it’s a comfortable greeting but because you really want to know and that person matters. That greeting could change a day for the better. Taking that 1 second out of your day.

Changes everything.

Peace.

August 8th 2018

The first Main Stream band Spotlight for this time is Nonpoint, and their new album is kick ass I must say. The "X" album EP will be in stores and online on August 24th. I really like their first song Chaos And Earthquakes on the new album.  I have listened to this guys since 2000 with their album "Statement".  My faverite song from Nonpoint is their cover song they did for Phil Collin's "In the Air Tonight". It always got stuck in my head and it did not sound like a cover which I like! Off the album "The Poison Red" I love the song "Divided...Conquer Them", the guitar work right at the start was different and caught my attention. I never been disappointed by Nonpoint. These are the Music Guru's music choice to check out for my band this time. I hope you enjoy and give them a listen! Well worth it!! I hope I'll see you at their show in Watertown 12th or Syracuse 14th if your in my area!

Thank you Nonpoint for letting me have you as my first Main Stream Spotlight!

September 11th 2018

My second Main Stream Spotlight, Thank you goes out to Julia Kiess, for giving me the opportunity to do the review.  Made this very easy and supportive! But on to the band Lord of the Lost, they have a very European  mystical sound. I heard my first song off of their new Album "Thornstar", "On this Rock I will Build My Church" it got to me, and I had to do their review/spotlight.  It captivated me with their booming but yet 80s feel.   I love how his voice is both thundering growl, but mesmerizing singing. This Hamburg can give hand out their Dark Metal feel, and leave you wanting more. They have a different feel with an alternative twist.  If you love Rammstein or ever heard of OOMPH both powerful European band. You will love Lord of the Lost.  Each of their songs on the album has a different sound. Using the metal tones in one, 80's retro in another, and deep dark Gothic to get to your black side.  Each band member has his own original touch to the band, and anyone boy and girl would fall in love with. This band is for sure a must have to your collection to your playlist.

Biography

Standstill is lethal.

In less than a decade, Dark-Metal-group Lord Of The Lost has become one of the most well-established and prolific acts of the international scene. Founded in 2007 by Chris Harms, initially as a solo-project, the Hamburg-based band has long since been on conquering course in the line-up of Harms (vocals, guitar), Class Grenayde (bass), π (guitar), Gared Dirge (piano, synths, percussion) and Niklas Kahl (drums.)

The group's sound has always been a sort of wild ride through a myriad of different dark genres, yet marked by a constant process of reinvention and an eternal clinch of melodies, aggression and emotions. Chris Harms rides his sonic juggernaut with vocal prowess and an ever-impressive range of styles that can abruptly leap from a sonorous clear singing voice to brutal death growls or wild screaming. With effortless grace, Lord Of The Lost manage to tackle quite contrasting musical extremes, incorporating ballads with hit-potential, harsh Metalcore-attacks, pompous concept albums and a soft spot for the outré, as exemplified in songs like the Latin-Metal-crossover-fun “La Bomba”, into their trademark sound. It is little wonder, then that not even the symphonic excursions with their classically grounded Lord Of The Lost Ensemble on “Swan Songs” and the accompanying shows seemed like a contradiction to their wildly rocking regular releases like “Die Tomorrow” or “From The Flame Into The Fire”, but rather like two logical sides of the same coin. On their 2016 release “Empyrean”, they have tried their hands at creating an Industrial-Metal-Space-Opera and, instead of falling victim to their own ambitions, they actually managed to funnel their ass-kicking power into a captivating concept work.

Live, Lord Of The Lost are one of a kind. In terms of showmanship, relentless stage energy, an accessible presence and sheer madness, the five Hamburg-based lads will give most current bands a serious run for their money. Lord-Of-The-Lost concerts are grand happenings of sweat, sex and rock'n'roll that have the group's international fan base increase with each and every tour … and there is no stage from Berlin to Moscow to Helsinki that the group has not thoroughly rocked into the ground. Lord Of The Lost deliver in full and guarantee an unforgettable experience with highly addictive potential.

In 2017 Lord Of The Lost have released their second ensemble-album "Swan Songs II" and are now about to release the new full-power-rock-album "Thornstar" on August 3rd 2018.

Everything stays different...

Aeternus

October 23th 2018

Aeternus is a band that is right up my alley! As soon as I heard them, I wanted to write about their music. I wanted to listen to more Dark Metal, and I got got just what I wished for. A Norwegien Dark Metal band from the Bergen scene to be more precise. Thank you, Dark Essence Records and Martin Kvam for sending me this band and others to listen to.  Not to mention their new album released on October 12th "Heathen"gets to my soul! Ares's deep growl voice gets you right in the chest, and the drumming role you can feel through out your body! The whole band works well together. The first song on the album "Hedning" in the beginning, is a soothing Norse chant to a Thor thundering drums and vocals. Hedning is an old term in old Sweden for "one who lives in the country". Part of the old Norse religion.  I must say more I listen right now as we speak, Aeternus has helped me to deepen my love for Dark, Death and Black Metal. Their song titles are straight out of history and traditions. Worth looking up and researching which I enjoyed doing. I love "The Sword of Retribution","Conjuring of the Gentiles", and "Boudica". Phobes really knows how to hit the drums at record speeds. Would love to see him go at it live!  Then the guitars take notice in "The Significance of Iblis", one of their most bad ass songs on the album. I never got bored with their different tones and speed. I didn't know what to expect next. You'll have to listen to see what I mean. Dude Ares if your guitar and vocals in this song I give you huge props!! You have a great talent!!  Last but not least, "Illa Mayyit"ends the album with more hard core old Norse dark metal! I loved every bit of this album. Got to the pit of my Heathen soul! Thank you so much, Dark Essence Records for sharing this album with me.

May 21st 2019

Once upon a day, a girl spots on her computer an European concert festival. To her eyes she sees a Viking ship! To her wonderment, what is this glorious sight? He tells her it's Amon Amarth and there plays "Raise Your Horns". On this day maybe 3 years ago, I was hooked to this band for life! Some years later the same girl that would be me, took a trip to Maryland to fulfill her dream to see these fellow Vikings! On May 14th 2019, I check marked on my Fuck it list. For one of the bands I want to see before I left this earth! Nothing could hurt this moment! I stood as I waited to walk in and shake the hand of my brother Heathens. I was cold, but entertained by my new friends and lot 1 parking lot mates. Bob #1 and Bob #2 with the real names of Lloyd and Colby, thank guys for keeping me laughing and glad to of met you! As they go in first, I feel no nerves as if Amon Amarth were already friends. Finally I am next! I walk right in and stand before them. I introduce myself and took my spot for my first picture with the band. From there they all signed my badge, and Johan Hegg gives me their manger's email twice. No my friends, the story does not end after this article! As I'm about to leave they say see you in a little while side stage. Later I take my seat and wait for my time to meet them side stage. I'm excited anticipating my time to meet them back stage. I try to enjoy finally seeing Cannibal Corpse, and yes awesome. My time has come to the pursuit of the vikings! I make my way through a very nice backstage which looked like a Hotel. Through the equipment speakers, guitars, and amps oh my!!! Then I stand await the performance between two speakers. On top both speakers interesting knicks-knacks and a glass bong. lol The first song as they came out on stage was "The Pursuit of Vikings" and I must say my heart started beating hard! I hear myself in my head saying this is Valhalla, and this is my moment! Ted and Olavi looks over at me as they played! Next thing I know Johan Hegg runs over to me and gives me a huge fist bump. After the first few songs, I was led to the pits so I could get some front view of the band.  The whole band gave the best show ever! They did not disappoint! Every last bit of their performance was as good as I saw on the computer years before. Johan Hegg had his huge drinking horn on his side. Very beautifully engraved I must add! He drank out it as I yelled Skal! When we raised our horns as the song started, of course "Raise Your Horns"! Amon Amarth also played all of my old favorites including "Twilight of The Thunder God", "As Loki Falls", "Deceiver of the Gods", "First Kill", and finished their performance with "Guardians of Asgaard". They also played two new song of their album "Crack the Sky" and my favorite "Raven's Flight". Also played "Shield Wall" off new album, which was not on my original set list given to me! I didn't want them to leave the stage and stay in the pit with them! They are just as good live as they are on their albums. Johan put on a good show as he cracked Thor's hammer. Their viking ship was phenomenal from the side and the front! All in all best ever, and so happy I talked myself into going!! I only wish was to stay in the pit for the other two bands Lamb of God and Slayer, but a last I had to be nice. It is what it is!

The History That Is Amon Amarth

Amon Amarth formed in 1992 in Tumba, Stockholm Sweden. Amon Amarth "Berserker" Album Review

On May 3rd their album was released, and long awaited for me! With their Viking history always on a rise of mighty lore. I will try at my best Heathen Norse Pagan abilities to give you a little background of each of the songs. I must say this album is one of the best they have put out thus far, and love every song on this one.

"For me, this is Amon Amarth 2.0,"vocalist Johan Hegg declares. "I think what we've done here is give ourselves the space to explore other parts of our musicality and who we are as a band. If you're content with where you're at, what's the point of continuing? We always want to come up with new ideas and find new ways of doing things and to create bigger and better shows and really try to improve every aspect of what the band is. We want to try to keep growing and to do this for as long as we have the possibility to do so, because this is the best fucking job in the world." (from their Facebook Page)

The Title of the album "Berkserker" is a Norse who fought with furious rage.  The first song off the Album is "Fafner's Gold" the story is of greed and death. Fafner (also spelled Fafnir) was turned into a dragon to guard the cursed gold. His brother Regin wanted the gold for himself, and had his son try to kill Fafner. https://norse-mythology.net/fafnir-the-dragon-in-norse-mythology/ . One of their heavier songs off the album, it's deceiving as the story behind it. It starts out slow and pretty, but quickly turns brutal! The second "Crack the Sky" is of course about Thor god of thunder, and his hammer lighting cracking the sky. Yes he is more than just Marvel character! I find this song powerful and booms as I listened to it in my car for first time! Gives Thor great justice to cause his fury as his Hammer thunders through the night sky!  As his hammer continues with the third song, "Mjolner, Hammer of Thor" the Norse name for his mighty hammer, and the story behind it. https://norse-mythology.net/thor-the-god-of-thunder-in-norse-mythology/  My favorite head banging for myself with it's classic heavy metal feel. The forth "Shield Wall" is a traditional way that Vikings fought. They cluster together in the front line to form a wall to protect from arrows and such. You can hear the war cry as the music starts, and the ban of brothers working together to win the battle. The words sang to a shield maiden's heart with the words "A chain is never stronger than its weakest link. We'll hold this wall together. Our hearts will never sink. Warfare, honour, glory, death" I will never be that weakest link to my brothers and sisters in life. Strength all that I do, and words I live by! So I guess you can say this song touched my Viking soul. Fifth "Valkyria", The Valkyrie women were the "Choosers of the Slain" who would choose who may die or live in battle. If chosen, the deceased would find themselves in Valhalla. I really like the guitar riff at the beginning of this song, and throughout. I must of seen the Valkyries the day I met Amon Amarth, because it felt like Valhalla and saw  a raven/crow once more from Odin.  The half way point, number six with "Raven's Flight" This song looks at a battle that was fought between King Aelle's army and the Viking army of Ragnor Lodbrok's sons who seek revenge after his death. I loved this song when I first heard it! If anyone knows me I have a close relationship to Ravens and crows. This song is very near and dear to my heart as Odin has his Ravens keep a close eye as he does in this song. As he appeared to each son after Ragnar's death. The next song "Ironside" is about Ragnar's son Bjorn Ironside. https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofEngland/Ragnar-Lothbrok/.  I was happy and surprised to see the history of Ironside and Ragnar added to the song lineup. As the song begins you can hear a legend in the making to Ironside's rising of power through great battles. His name was made of his own fight and not under his father's legacy. Johan Hegg has spent a lot of time with the TV series "Vikings" once on and behind the scenes. As Vikings also showed on Johan's Grimfrost promotions. The eighth song is "Berserker at Stamford Bridge", this song is about the battle at Stamford Bridge, recounting the Vikings last stand against the English army in 1066 and the mind-bending heroics of one axe-wielding warrior. Each of their musical rendition brings you perfectly to the story they are telling. You can close your eyes and truly see them battling and the blood shed. Quite simply the ninth song is about the Viking ship, and what it was like to be there with this song "When Once Again We Can Set Our Sails". I heard classic Amon Amarth in this song, and it may be the ninth one your attention is still held. Your still wanting to hear more. "Skoll and Hati" the tenth song, in Norse mythology these lupine siblings chase the sun and the moon, forcing the cycle of day and night. and when we reach the end of the world (or Ragnarok) they will catch up with their respective prey and darkness will fall upon the world. The sons of Fenrir is Skoll meaning "Treachery" and Hati meaning "Hater". Can you hear the two wolves running through this song? The quicken and great drumming gives you this sight of them. http://www.northernpaganism.org/shrines/fenrir/writing/the-sons-of-fenrir-hati-and-skoll.html Their second to last song "Wings of the Eagles", eagles in Norse Mythlogy is a symbol of great strength and death. But this song is actually about when the Vikings made it to America. May I mention Blood eagle and the wings in such a thing is a must see. Look it up if you do not know. This song is the second fastest on the album and an awesome death metal song! A last the end of the album is with "Into the Dark" , Johan Hegg, said in a recent interview with Metal Hammer magazine that this was about the darkness we carry around in us and makes us do things that are counter-productive. "About realizing that the way you behave sometimes either hurts yourself or the people around you". As humans we can all say we have done the same at some point of our lives, and how we make up for it is what matters. Also on the other hand we have also had to deal with other's demons, and how we battle our internal and eternal demons and Hel. We can hopefully break free. What a triumphant way to end the album. Conquering our own battles within ourselves. I hope I can say I have! To hear about the music from the band please watch the videos belong!

Into the Dark

[Verse 1]
There is a darkness
In my soul
A darkness
That can't be tamed
A deep void of emptiness
A gaping wound
A vile, corrupted entity
That has no name

[Chorus 1]
From the dark
Into the light
I make this journey
On my own
From the dark
Into the light
I must fight this darkness
All alone

[Verse 2]
I try to do
What is right
And still my twisted mind
Is full of spite
Each day a struggle
With this side of me
A losing battle
I can’t break free

[Refrain]
No
I can't break free

[Bridge]
Out of the dark
My demons arise
Dragging me back
Into despair
Into the dark, into the dark
Every time
I think I am free
They drag me back down
Down through the void
Into the dark, into the dark
Dagas my guide
But Thurisas bides
Drags me back down
Into despair
Into the dark, into the dark

[Chorus 1]
From the dark
Into the light
I make this journey
On my own
From the dark
Into the light
I fight these demons alone

[Refrain]
No
I can't break free
Oh no
This darkness is me

[Verse 3]
I fight these demons
These agents of fear
I’m battered and beaten
My scars invisibly clear
So here I stand
Naked and true
I am who I am
I am Loke to you

[Chorus 2]
From the dark depths
Of my mind
They crawl towards the light
My demons are a part
Of who I am
I embrace the dark depths
Of my mind
That invades my heart
'Cause without darkness
Who am I?

June 18th 2019

Metal is my heart, but Norse music is my soul! This month I have kept theme, and would like to Danheim to the mix. Their newest album released March 15th 2019 is one of their best yet! One of the best Norse folk music around! If you need to get in touch with your Viking mellow side, please do listen! The first I heard and also on my Music Guru pick list is "Odinn". It starts out slow and works up to a fast pace. I love it for this, because it gets to all sides of me. If you listen closely you can hear Huginn and Muninn Odin's Ravens, and also I hear a lady moaning in some parts. Danheim has a lot of Norse history in their music also. The title of the album "Hringras" means cycle in icelandic, and is about Vikings in life and death. Each song is about that very thing. As "Ragnarok" is a series of events and battles which ended the world and the "Fate of the Gods". Many great gods including Odin, Thor, Tyr and Loki perished that time. You can as always look up and research the Norse/Germanic history! "Lifa & Daudr" is a very haunting song that takes you away to death or life. Mike Olsen does a wonderful job bringing you to a vision quest of mind and soul! If you need time to yourself, and be one with the Norse gods this is an album for you!

July 10th 2019

Main Stream spotlight for the month of July is Within Temptation"Resist" is their latest album released in January 2019. Each of their albums has a theme and story behind it. This one is, Sharon den Adel: “It’s important to resist, because in today’s society people increasingly get oppressed by social subjection – a process fueled by authorities, dictators but also multi-nationals that manipulate and control. We have to break free in order to develop ourselves, especially when we are constantly being controlled and monitored by a higher power.” Each song keeps with this theme, and shows a new metal sense for their sound. Their classic Within Temptation classical feel and her operatic voice, but with this album a darker way to metal for them. "The Reckoning", the first song on the album shows this method. It is upbeat but yet a powerful thunder of riffs. With a few songs that sounds like classic Within Temptation like "Endless War", "Supernova", "Raise Your Banner", or "Mad World" still has a new upbeat feel. "In Vain" has a good thought behind it that everyone needs to hear the lesson from. "Trophy Hunter" is the last on the album. When you first play it, it does not sound like them at all! Classic metal merging into classic Within! As you just read the title, you can tell each song keeps with the theme. The Reckoning to speak out against the ones who forces us to be enslaved by the dictators. Endless War is of course about all the wars for power. Supernova is wanting peace and for the tyranny to end. Still having hope for a bigger better future, and a explosion of change. Just what I get from reading the lyrics, and the feel of the music. Just a few examples, and worth finding more yourself! I have always loved figuring out the music and learning deeper into what they are trying to say.

                                                                                                                                         Written by Jennifer Cook/Phoenix Ravenmoon

Bio:

Within Temptation is a symphonic-rock band founded in 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. They are located in the Netherlands. Winning many awards from two European MTV music awards to World Music Awards. They have kept up changing themselves musically with each of their album from 200 to today! They never wanted to sound the same. Even their band's fifth studio album “The Unforgiving”, was released in March 2011, alongside both a comic book series and a series of short films that together encompass a story. The first single, "Faster", was complemented by the first short film “Mother Maiden”. The second short film, “Sinéad”, is tied in with the similar titled single from “The Unforgiving” and the third single “Shot in the Dark” tells the story of the third short film titled “Triplets”. They released six albums in all aside from other side albums. Never cease to amaze a fan!

The Reckoning

Within Temptation

As cold as stone, they march in darkness
Enslaving the young and killing their fathers
But soon they'll know the path they've chosen
Has carved their fate in stone

In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we'll always hold the line
Of reckoning

Red tears run down like a river
Don't close your eyes, it won't disappear
No fear, you wanna end the pain
Don't let go, don't back down
Hold the line, we'll bring the reckoning

In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we'll always hold the line
Of reckoning

We're all alone, walking in twilight
The night has been long and so many have fallen
Feel no remorse, light will be breaking
Our freedom is worth it all

In blood and tears, a thousand times
We'll rise against, we'll always hold the line
Of reckoning

Red tears run down like a river
Don't close your eyes, it won't disappear
No fear you wanna end the pain
Don't let go, don't back down
Hold the line, we'll bring the reckoning

I see your face, find peace of mind
Between the madness and the sadness and the fire burning
The end of war, the great divine
We'll see the day
Of reckoning

In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we'll always hold the line
In blood and tears, a thousand times
We'll rise against, we'll always hold the line

Of reckoning

We'll bring the reckoning
In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we'll always hold the line
Of reckoning

In Vain

Within Temptation

Beautify all I know, keep on dancing
Let it all turn to gold
When the dream touches ground
The demons walk in, and I know what awaits

A priceless glory
Memento mori
All for nothing now
I know

Nothing of the heart remains
Even if we could've stayed
We've been here long enough
Long enough to know it's all in vain
Everything we tried to say
Up until the final day
I guess we said enough
Said enough to know it's all in vain

All in vain
All in vain
All in vain
All in vain

See the world through a tear, keep on breathing
Salt has dried, you're not here
Just a heartbeat away, the demons walk in
Now I know it's too late

A priceless glory
Memento mori
All for nothing now
I know

Nothing of the heart remains
Even if we could've stayed
We've been here long enough
Long enough to know it's all in vain
Everything we tried to say
Up until the final day
I guess we said enough
Said enough to know it's all in vain

All in vain
All in vain
All in vain
All in vain

Took the memories, but I can feel them fading
All our vanities, there's nothing left to save me now
I can take 'em 'cross the border
I can take 'em 'cross the border
Leaving everything we have for you to find it
Every time I walk away, I wanna turn around
I wanna turn around

Nothing of the heart remains
Even if we could've stayed
We've been here long enough
Long enough to know it's all in vain
Everything we tried to say
Up until the final day
I guess we said enough
We said enough to know it's all in vain
I guess we said enough
We said enough to know it's all in vain

All in vain
All in vain
All in vain
All in vain

September 10th 2019

This is a review I've been waiting for my whole music loving career!! Since 1994, I first heard "Blind" from Korn and it changed my outlook on music. The had their own original sound and look with dreadlocks and homeboy outfits! The world was still filled with real MTV videos and Headbanger's Ball was starting to end. The USA was turning to Grudge music which I do love, but something different like KORN! I was sold from there and always loved them since! I have gotten every child of mine into them at some point. Played them at every chance I got from "Follow the Leader" 1998 album with "Freak on a Leash", "Issue" album 1999, "Greatest Hits vol.1" 2004 to fill many songs, "The Paradigm Shift" 2013 with "Never Never" and need I say more. There is to many to say that desires to be brought up! For me they are in so many of my memories bad or good with a soundtrack of my life! Memories centered around concerts! First memory was the one I missed and balled my eyes out for missing it. July 23rd 1999, I was at a bar celebrating my birthday. I saw Korn on the big screen playing at sad excuse of a Woodstock 99 in Rome, NY. I was upset at the time I missed it, but in the long run after hearing of the fire and prices then. I was happy I didn't go! Exactly 15 years later July 23rd 2014, I finally saw them at Mayhem Fest! There after saw them with my first born daughter Shyanne, made my dream come true meeting Korn in person at VIP July 19th 2017, and now this last Aug. 11th 2019 with my youngest daughter and my other 1st Korn fan Aaron. So I guess you could say made up for years past! I'm not stopping from here as long as they don't!!

 KoRn Concert Review

August 11th 2019 at SPAC in Saratoga Spings, NY, a very special day indeed with Korn, Alice in Chains and various others bands like Horror. It was my daughter Alyssa's first metal concert, and we took our friend Aaron Duerr also reviewer for this site. Alyssa has liked Korn since I think I was pregnant with her! She first head banged at 1 year old to "Freak on a Leash!  Was very special because I first saw Korn at the same venue too in 2014!  As far as performance goes, I must say this one blew the rest of them away I've seen! My only disappointment was missing Munky, because he was out on leave having a baby! The lighting, special effects, and streamers at the end were amazing! Their set list was perfect other than I wanted to hear their new song "Cold" live! I loved seeing Alyssa's big eyes and devil horns jamming out on every song! Her knowing every word of every song she knew.  I know she was excited to see Jonathan Davis, and made a new friend in Fieldy!! There was a very nice lady beside Alyssa, and she told us Alyssa made her night and made the concert for her even better. Alyssa and I reminded her bringing her child to their first concert. The whole band did a fabulous job including Munky's fill in JR Bareis. I'm sure because JR also was in the band Love and Death with Head.  At the end of their set Alyssa didn't want to go, and wanted much more. With a sad face we told her it's all over just to surprise her there's more! So the first time ever for me myself even, we stayed for the encore to the very end. Also went to the side of the stage for a last look and hopes to get a drumstick or pick for her!

Lastly for the concert review, I thought it would be nice to see a newer Korn fan Alyssa side by side interview with a #1 fan seasoned fan Aaron! We will see how their answers match! Keep in mind Alyssa is only 9 years old!

Alyssa's Interview

1.What is your first memory of Korn?

Probably when I was five. When my mom was playing it. I can't remember which song, but it made me feel weird. I like it and I felt excited. It was new for me to like metal.

2.What is your favorite Korn song?

Freak on a Leash, and always will be. Because it's the first song I heard and more metal to me.

3.How did it feel to hear Freak on a leash in person live?

Very exciting, happy and nervous. First metal concert ever! All the weird thoughts of what was going to happen.

4.Over all what was it like to see Korn for the first time?

Amazing! For seeing Jonathan for the first time in person. Exciting to see them and the music is even better live. All the pictures I’ve ever saw of them just wasn't the same. Seeing them live was even better! They're better than any other metal band! Wish I got to hug Jonny Boy!

5.What was it like to be around and learning from a seasoned Korn fan?

Was a lot cooler to be around other Korn fans that already went thru the experience.  Fun because I don't know many others at my age who like them. I learned a lot that I didn't know before. I learned all their nicknames Head, Munky, Ray, Fieldy ( I call him pigtails) and I already knew Jonathan.

6.Anything else you'd like to say about Korn?

I love Korn! They are the best band ever. I love the new album because it's different of all of them. I like it more cause it's different sounds. Not the same as always.

Aaron's Interview

1. What is your first memory of Korn?

My first memory of KoRn was in 1998 when my buddy told me I had to check out the album Follow The Leader. I listened to it and was instantly addicted to KoRn lol

2. What is your favorite Korn song?

I was afraid this question was gonna be asked and it's such a hard question to answer being such a die-hard fan lol...I'll give my Top 5 KoRn songs instead...Daddy, Kill You, Seed, Hating, and Black Is The Soul

3. How did it feel to hear your favorite songs live?

Absolutely amazing! I enter my own little world when I see KoRn live as I'm sure you saw when we saw them lol

4. Over all what was it like to see Korn for the first time? This concert was your? And what was it like now?

The first time I ever saw KoRn live was in 2006 in Connecticut and was amazing. I was front row and it was 10 Years, Mudvayne, and KoRn! It was a lot different seeing KoRn the first few times cause the set lists were a lot different back then. Their set lists for the past 5 or more years have been roughly the same and pretty much like a greatest hits set list. The show we went to was my 13th KoRn show! And it was probably my best KoRn show experience seeings I was with you 2 and it felt great to be at a KoRn show with others that love them as much as I do

5. What was it like to watch Alyssa a younger fan being a long time fan of Korn yourself?

If was so freaking cool seeing her rock out! It's so cool to see young kids at concerts seeing them enjoying the experience at such a young age. She definitely didn't disappoint lol

6. Anything else you'd like to say about Korn? What you think of the newest album?

KoRn is truly the best band ever in my opinion, they created something that changed rock and heavy metal for the better! So many bands have tried to mock their sound and style but no one has really done it right in my opinion.

The album:It's so dark! Definitely one of my favorite albums of all time. It has its super heavy moments and has a lot of the softer side of KoRn which I love. It's easy for any band to stay either heavy or soft but not many bands can do both and pull it off. My favorite song on the album is Idiosyncrasy

KoRn's 13th studio album "The Nothing" is due to release on September 13th 2019. I had a opportunity to listen to the album a head of time, and glad I did! This album is a collage of their past albums with new mixes. With a roll of the dice you don't know what you get from song to song. You may get classic KoRn, newer album KoRn, Jonthan Davis own sound or even Head's roll, new all together but you never never know! Their first release "You'll Never Find Me", you hear standard KoRn and it grows on you as you listen. You think your gonna get the usual, but that's what some would think. Why you most hear the second release "Cold" because it gets even better era of KoRn. A rhythm that grabs you and makes you wanna hear more of the album. Because it is so different from the first release. Then yet another you may have heard "Can You hear me", has another era sound to it. But starting to hear something different than norm a little from this band.  The other ten is well worth listening to! There is a darkness for sure within this album. You can hear for sure the torment that Jonathan went through within the year and beyond. KoRn put their heart and soul into every song.  Music can heal a soul and stir up memories. I can say once again their music hit my soul. They always seem to know what point in my life I need a song to hear. I can see something in their music also that reminds me of my own feelings. There is one song I do love the best! When you first hear it your eyes pop out, and it is like no other KoRn. It's on the heavier side and changes it's tune through the whole song. I won't tell you which one it is, and let you guess yourself. Yes it does speak to me also and reminds me of a lot of the anger I went through.  There is an emotional roller coaster for sure and a reminder with despair there is a way to be free after. That is where I connect to this album. I still hear some trapped with guilt or regret from others, and learned recently I am truly free from that pain of the past. I hope Jonathan has done this himself, and maybe you'll find that in this album. True music to show you're not alone in the darkness. The last song I will admit brought real tears to my eyes! You can see and feel the pain of losing his wife buried with blame. This album brings true emotion and the dark feelings inside. I hope you get a deep revelation and insight from listening. Life is to short to live in the darkness! Maybe be able to see the light! I can seriously say I found a new favorite KoRn alum if not my most favorite yet!  Oh ya there's of course bagpipe too!    \m/

Lacuna Coil

October 11th 2019

In just a few hours will be a newest release of Lacuna Coil's album "Black Anima", and I am proud to say I finally get to write about this band. For over 10 years ago, I discovered Lacuna Coil for my life really. They were always able to be there for me musically whenever I needed them, as I evolved into anew within the decade of changes.  The first of their songs I heard was from the 2002 album actually "Comalies" and it was "Heaven's a Lie". I was right then and there was drawn to them. Then directly after I listened more and knew I'd love them for years. Next I heard and haven't stopped listening to "Enjoy the Silence" off their 2006 album "Karmacode". My favorite cover of a Depeche Mode of all time. Shortly after I first heard them, I got to hear my first new release from them in 2009 "Swallow Life". Lacuna Coil's first song off the album was "I Like It", and it was my celebration of freedom completely changed life. So much was changing good and bad, but I decided to take it as a happy time! "Today I'm gonna fly. There's nothing that can keep me on the ground.Touch the sky. I'm free inside." I remember doing a happy dance driving yelling that as loud as I could. When I realized nothing will ever me get down, and frankly never has since. I'm reminded to keep strong and keep fighting for my happy dance. Through this time I listen and my family had to hear them through the house. I am glad it spread to the next generation to my oldest daughter Shyanne which still listens to them also. I hope their words heals for her as well as it has for me. We will make it to Lacuna Coil live together.

As far as the band itself, A strong fun loving female lead Cristina Scabbia was and always will be a great influence to ladies of the music industry like she has for me. The many faces of her badass metal woman, geek with comic books, video gamer and message of strength for all to get through the days. Aside with her male lead Andrea Ferro, they are the most powerful duo I've heard yet! Along side their producer and bassist  Marco Coti-Zelati and various band members grew to a powerhouse metal band. They are based from of Italy and founded in 1994.  They evolved themselves through time and called their 2016 album "Delirium" their changing point freely to a heavier arrangement.  When I heard "House of Shame" for the very first release with Andrea's growl at the beginning, I was like hell ya holy crap guys! The power behind his force of pain and accompanies by Cristina's song bird voice was a great yin yang combo. They have changed through the years with a moving message behind each album. It was well put to say that each record is a movie and Lacuna Coil is the characters. As they put a show for their fans fully into each one, and becomes a part of the movie called their album.

Lacuna-Coil-Black-Anima.jpg

As I sit and write this article, Lacuna Coil album "Black Anima" has been released this October 11th 2019.  I had a wonderful surprise of three bonus track on this album. As I listen I am jumping for freaking joy to have new extra to hear from them. I was able to hear the rest of the album a head of time, and blessed to be able to. I will completely let you check out the bonus tracks yourself. They are amazing as the rest of the songs are. They continued their heavier side with a new touch of electronic remix they have not done before.

Black Anima means black soul in Italian because everyone goes through a walk of darkness.  Their first released song "Layers of Time" is about time that you cannot take back but to be able gain strength from a past you have to leave behind.  Many layers of moments that shaped you into who you are now. Lacuna Coil has done it for me once again with lyrics and music that touch my light and black soul. Just at the right time with words that helped me through another time in my life. "Through the layers of time. We'll live again.Forget the past. We'll be alright.", I heard the lyrics exactly the time I needed. This song is classic Lacuna Coil with the edge they do well.  Accompanied by their next release "Reckless", which for me is continuation of "I like it" to celebrate life and now get reckless with a madness of having fun with the new you.  You get to hear the first combo of heavy and electronic off this album from this song. I found it to be a real kick ass reflection of having a carefree fun.  Many songs off this album does show you many darknesses we may all encounter. Also show you that you can have your own power to get out of the darkness.  "Under the Surface" is about trying to hide who you really are with your flaws. All the good you show but yet the darkness comes through, and you need truly face your flaws to fix them. Not to hide them they still leak through your pores. As "Now or Never" shows you can't wait to change your ways and capture anew now before you can't. "Veneficium" is about being trapped in a toxic relationship. Feeling like you can't escape! I can tell you personally you can escape and be better from this. Time heals the memories and changes them to a warrior feeling that you freed yourself from that. Three songs with perfect examples of the dark message with a lesson to survive with strength. Another song off this album I must include "Save Me", recently I have gone through tough times. Not knowing why me, why must I go through these reminders of the past and new problems at hand. I was driving in my car once more, and listening to this album. Next I hear Cristina speak these words, "And what remains is the shadow of my past.I look in the mirror and hate what I see.I don't recognise my face anymore. And wonder where all of my dreams are gone.Feeling lost and empty. I know I can't turn back time. But I just don't want to give up. I can't give up." Right then and there I'll admit I cried, but realized I've gotten through worse. That I have dreams to fulfill and will be back on top even better. There was a lesson and reason for this.  Final song I am speaking of off the album is the self titled song "Black Anima", there is not a day I have not listened since I heard it. At the start there is a haunting electronic sound and a background of I do believe a xylophone. Giving it a dark and crappy sound as it speaks of the blackness of our souls. A message to let go before it destroys your whole being. Some can't step out of the darkness for it gives them what they know and need, but death follows for sure as they stay.  I'm sure I made my point with this album, and Lacuna Coil themselves. I say thank you to this band and Cristina's words of wisdom through time that touched so many! I hope you too out there finds a light through your darkness, and this album inspires you to do so.

                                                                                                                                    Written by Jennifer Cook/Phoenix Ravenmoon

I dedicate this song to my oldest daughter Shyanne! May the lyrics remind you have my strength to make through the layers of time. When the memories gets tough remember we'll be alright!

Layers of Time

Lacuna Coil

Layers of time
Layers of time

I live the life I left behind
A story born of scars and strifes
My heart is blind and frozen
I'm among snakes
I'm well disguise
Healers and dealer of this time
The poison enters every night

Well disguise

Victims of time
We take our chance again
Our road is paved with pain
The past we can't rewind

Building this life
Still trapped inside
I think I've lost the storyline
Forever hurt and broken
I swear I'll get out alive
Burning the bridges built behind
My life's reloading every night

Out alive

Victims of time
We take our chance again
Our road is paved with pain
The past we can't rewind

Twisting
Turning
Through the baptism of fire
Burning
Angels
Falling
Through the spiral of time
Twisting
Turning
Through the baptism of fire
Burning
Angels
Falling
Through the spiral of time
Twisting
Turning
Through the baptism of fire
Burning
Angels
Falling
Through the spiral of time
Twisting
Turning
Through the baptism of fire
Burning
Angels
Falling
Through the spiral of time

Through layers of time
We'll live again
Forget the past
We'll be alright

Victims of time
We take our chance again
Our road is paved with pain
Keep walking
We'll find the way

Darkend

October 19th 2019

First I would like to thank Norwegian label, Dark Essence Records for bringing me great bands to review! You never disappoint and you didn't for sure with Darkend! As soon as I read and listened to this band, I was intrigued and compelled to find out more. A ritualistic Black Metal band with ceremonial  mystic sound. Then to see Linda-Fay Hella from Wardruna, I was even more interested because they are one of my favorites! Working with her on their song " With Everburning Sulphur Unconsumed" that has a haunting and dark inspiration. They made a name of their own in Italy. "DARKEND is Extreme Ritual Art: arcane symphonies exalting ancient ceremonial chants lost in nocturnal remembrances, sulphur riffs engraved on black metal patterns and progressive freedom."

Their newest album "Spiritual Resonance" was released just over a month ago on September 13th 2019. There is 6 songs on the record and from the start you feel like you stepped into a ritual. First song "The Three Ghouls Buried at Golgotha" is haunting and eerie at the start to fast black metal with classical sounds in the middle. Very interesting music changes throughout a seven minute journey.  You never now what will come next with a shock of brutal cords. Each song blends to the next with a story of cult ritual blackness. "With Everburning Sulpher Unconsumed" featuring Linda-Fay Hella, her voice works well with this song and perfect for the essence of the theme of it. It's a must to experience and take hold with them! I cannot really describe with the justice they desire. Because it is something for sure you need to hear for yourself to really know the true ritual journey! Something best by candle light and darkness!! An interview I was very much looking forward to read. I hope so are you!!

Interview for Darkend

All answers by Animæ.

1. Please tell me a little bit about the band?

I’d refer to Darkend as an Entity rather than as a band. An Entity that embodies the voice of Shadows and the shape of Ghosts, the Fire of the Elsewhere and the Hidden Rivers of the Underworld. Darkend started to stretch its claws on what you usually call “reality” since 2006, with the emanation of four albums and a demo recording. It is like an ever-flowing stream of mist and so it changed its face many times with the passing of time, incorporating step by step and with a different percentages ceremonial chants, arcane cemeterial music, nocturnal ambiences and sulphur riffs engraved on obscure metal patterns. The primary target is (and has always been) to bring to light the Darkness and the wonders of the Inner Abyss, to leave a deep scarred trace on the Soul of those who come across our Art. Raising a powerful vibrational Energy, with a complex web of Mantras & Exorcisms.

2. Tell me about the new album coming out?

I would define “Spiritual Resonance” as “the other side of the coin” of what “The Canticle Of Shadows” has been. There’s still that peculiar aura of sacredness and malevolence, the whisper of the Other World mixed with the pure strength of Higher Spirits... but everything now is more canalized through ritualistic structures, giving to the whole album a different atmosphere. It’s has an ancient vibe... like something erupting from a Time before time. And you can hear the true voice of myriads of Souls, if you let it flow. It’s a very emotional record and we’re really pleased with it.

3. Please tell me about the spirituality behind your band?

It’s really personal and it’s not possible to explain it with words, it’s more like something you have to experience and to feel in a very deep way. The best way to unlock the gates to those inner labyrinths is to let go every thought, every judgment, every limiting belief... allowing the sound of notes and the sound of words to flow through your inmost spiritual chasm.

4. Some do not understand what the genre of Black metal and the difference of Death metal. Can you enlighten us with the answer?

Oh, I’m not too much into categorizing and putting borders to Art. I think that it’s a quite limiting and boring behavior. Of course I understand that there are some objective parameters that people need to use in order to orientate themselves and to describe things in a... let say, in a way that reflect their own worlds and their own schemes. But it’s like caging beauty, you know? It’s like removing colors from a diamond with a thousand shades. I can feel the stench of Death in something that other people consider “just black metal” just like I can sense the darkness from dimensions unknown in something that people consider “proper death metal”. It’s very subjective, and everyone should be free to experience whatever they feel attracted to without putting too much attention to definitions and borders created by other human beings. Experience with your own ears and soul, that’s the most important thing to do in my opinion.

5. What is the story behind the song "With Everburning Sulphur Unconsumed"?

Well, I would not consider it a story.  Since “The Canticle Of Shadows” none of my songs are “stories” but Mantras and Exorcisms, as I stated before. Considering this, “With Everburning Sulphur Unconsumed" is a metaphorical rendition of a powerful ritual of death, deconstruction and rebirth. And it’s painted with sorrow, dark red pain, rotten flesh, haste and blazing purifying Fire. Colours as rocks, rocks as burdens, burdens as gateways, gateways as colours.

6. How did you come about to work with Linda-Fay Hella, and what was it like?

I first had the chance to met Lindy  after a Festival in France, where I was doing some guest vocals for the Gaahl’s Wyrd show. Then, after some months,  I met her again and again during my travels to Bergen and we developed a good friendship.  So, it's quite obvious that my first thoughts went to her, when I needed someone outside my body to sing these peculiar words coming from the Elsewhere. Lindy is a truly professional Artist and it was really pleasant and easy to collaborate with her. And the emotions that still come out when I hear her voice merging with mine, well... it’s something that doesn’t belong to this world.

7. What bands influenced you?

No one in particular. We are rather moved by what lies behind the stare. By those impenetrable caves invisible to the eye. Darkend is the voices for the silence of the Dead.

8. Do you feel the world is more open to other's beliefs? Why or why not.

Sadly, I feel that a huge part of humanity is totally cutting every true connection with the Spiritual world. And when I talk about a “Spiritual world” I mean a world that you can enter just by losing yourself into the inmost caves of your very own Essence, not something that you can reach by joining to a mass religious confession or by following other people ideas. Massification means abolition of every identity, and you cannot reach any Higher Sphere by renouncing to your identity: it’s just like trying to climb a mountain without arms and legs. And at the same time, the modern human being is mostly lost in a whirlwind of distractions that manifest itself in many seductive forms: technological progress, materialism, social schemes and boundaries... do you really want to hear the voice of that God with one and a thousand names? Then start to immerge yourself into muddy and cold caverns. Start to pay attention to the whispers of the buried ones and to feel the vibrations released by the trees. Allow yourself to feel, to fear, to be sad, to be scared, to be yourself again. There’s no belief that is not YOUR belief.

9. If you were able to say anything you wanted at all. Music wise or whatever you feel. What would it be?

Be true to your own Essence. Every time you lie, you murder a part of your Spirit.

10. Anything you'd like to add that I didn't?

I just would like to thank you for your precious time and attention. Feel free to join us during one of the next live rituals, you will not be disappointed.

**And I Music Guru must say Animæ I will for sure because I'm sure I won't be disappointed! I would take part for sure!! Thank you for for a great interview and music!!! \m/**

Devilskin

April 17th 2020

I'm so fired up right now to do this review for Devilskin! I honestly always wanted to have this band to get a proper recognition.  Back in 2010 at the birth place of Hamilton, New Zealand the band was formed.  Fronted by a talented vocalist Jennie Skulander with her vocal symphony to a powerful roar.  I was impressed from the start when I first heard "Start a Revolution" a few years ago, and haven't stopped loving them since. Her amazing lovely voice to brutal growl had me hooked! It was at a time I wanted to start my own revolution, and fit the sound track of my life! I thank you guys for that! I so wanted to start my own magazine because I wanted to do the article then and there myself. So I am honored to do so now!  Once again I was hooked as soon as I heard "Corrode" when it was released. I was so excited to hear them once again with their latest album "Red" released on March 4th 2020. I love that the very first track off the album is "Do you see Birds", she is growling from the start with justice to get you started with fury. They bring you back again to enough mellow with "Eyes Red Heavy" with a classic metal soft feel. I must say though this album has tested how far they can go metal wise, and Devilskin proved they can go the distance! As I listen to "Same Life" as I write I am stunned by the different rages each band member can do! Gives you so much to listen to and not able to know what to expect next with a thundering ending! There is twelve very different song on this record, and not a one I can say I don't like. I can not wait to hear them live one day!

I'll take you back to New Zealand 10 years ago.  Led by Jennie with the lead guitarist Nail that brings the best performance in their videos and live. Followed by Paul Martin on bass with his aggressive deep playing Devilskin would be lost without him. Lastly the drummer and also the son of Paul, Nic Martin the youngest of his time at 15 brings his teen energy to the band. All the members of Devilskin brings it together well and that works perfectly! The first album I actually got to hear was the 2014 "We Rise" with lyrics that stuck with me till this day. Where I heard my favorites "Start a Revolution", "Little Pills", and "Vessel" to name a few. Next 2016 was "Be Like a River" album with my personal war song "Voices" and also loved "Animal".  Voices reminded me I have amazing friends and family including the music world to back my revolution.  "Bury me Drown me in your chemicals Like a vine that grows Or a seed first sown I will rise again Watch my army Watch my army descend. I have an army and their voices are loud, I have an army and they'll, tear you down" These lyrics is still my Phoenix cry!  As they continued with "Red" in 2020 I still have the feeling of pride of listening to lady powerful lead band!  I am honored I was able to do your article finally for my magazine! You are one of the reasons this magazine was possible! My last straw, I wanted to come out of the shadows and write for myself and no one else do it for me. I can't wait to hear more from this band every time I hear you!

Interview with Devilskin's Paul and Jennie

Hi Jennifer, Paul from Devilskin here.

1. Please tell me more about the band Devilskin?

“We are based in Hamilton New Zealand, we have been together for over ten years. We have two #1 albums here at home and have just released our 3rd studio album entitled RED. The bassist and drummer are father and son, the singer is the drummers Aunt. The guitarist and bassist are not related.”

2. Where did the name Devilskin come from?

“I got a picture in my head from some lyrics Jennie penned to the first song we wrote together, a song called Fade. It made me think of the duality of life and how unscrupulous people can wear an angels’ or a devils’ skin. I decided to make it one word, our word Devilskin.”

3. I love the newest songs released! The first release "Corrode", what is it all about and what inspired you to write it?

“Jennie wrote the lyrics about the feeling of being overwhelmed or immersed. When we pitched the song to different video directors one in particular came back with exactly this theme and even down to the colour we had in mind. I think the video for Corrode speaks for itself.”

4. This question is for Jennie, what is it like being a lead female vocal for a metal band?

“Its great! I love it. some people don't expect me to do low growls etc and it kinda blows their mind. I love getting all made up and running around on stage too”

5. Which vocals are easier or more fun to do singing or growling? What does it take to growl like a how to kind of thing?

“Singing is more fun because I like to challenge my vocal range and style. For me with growling I feel like I put my whole body into it, scream from the gut. something I discovered I could do as a teenager”

6. To name a few what bands have influenced you through time?

“Paul influences are; Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Pantera, Phoebe Snow, The Stranglers, Testament, Elvis, The Sex Pistols, UFO a lot of great artist from various genres. All of us have a pretty broad taste in music. Some of Jennies Influences are Deftones and Faith No More”

7. What do you feel is the best part of being in the metal world?

“The feeling of unity at shows and festivals. The power of the music.”

8. Tell us more about the new album? What was your favorite story making this album?

“We made our new album RED as a real immersive experience for our audience.  We wanted the songs and the way they flow and breathe, to come to life for the listener. One of the songs ‘Endo’ is Jennies very real story of her diagnosis with stage four endometriosis, again, we tell the story with the video for that song. We did have a lot of fun making this album and there are some very real stories behind the songs.”

9. What would you like to tell your fans around the world at this time?

“I would tell our fans to stay close, stay well and support each other. Rediscover the joy of music without the complications of time constraints. Relax and listen and take strength from music.”

10. If there was anything I did not ask that you would like to add to this interview?

“We have been very fortunate to have toured and shared stages with some incredible artists Halestorm, Slash, Disturbed, Sumo Cyco, like us these bands work their asses off and their live shows are really special. We hope that the live scene returns for the metal world as soon as possible so we can play our new album to you folks.”

Grey Daze

July 4th 2020

On this Independence day I decided to write an article close to my heart.  In loving memory to Chester Bennington, I wanted to share his life with the band Grey Daze.  My son Noah loved him since he learned how to walk and dance to his favorites of Chester. Now a teenager he still listens to him and I wanted to introduce another side of his music.

The band Grey Daze was founded in the year 1993 when the band members were young like me. The band members is Chester Bennington (vocals), Sean Dowdell (drums), Mace Beyers (bass) and Cristin Davis (guitar).  Lasted till 1998 when Bennington left to join Linkin Park.  Remaining friends still through time Dowdell and Bennington, Chester brought up to Sean the idea to do a reunion in early 2017.  But sadly Chester died July 2017 three years ago this month.  Shocking news to the music industry and fans like my son. He touched many with the music, and now Grey Daze in his honor continues this tradition now!

The album "Amends" just released on June 26th 2020. When I first heard "Soul Song" tears came to my eyes, and then I found out Chester's son Jaime directed the video. What a wonderful way to pay tribute to his dad! "I will be waiting,
With a song in my soul, I will be waiting, With a song in my soul, His melody opens up the sun", what beautiful true words to this man! Next I heard "B12", OMG I love this song and still ringing in my head! Catchy and brings back memories of great music I always jammed to! Then add  Korn’s Brian ‘Head’ Welch and James ‘Munky’ Shaffer in the mix and appearing in the video is just perfect for a girl like me! There is 11 different songs on the album and each with their own amazing feel to the music. "Shouting Out" is their latest release and the last song on the album.  Sometimes we all just need to learn how to shout it out, and be heard. Never stay in silence! I really liked the song "She Shines" a whole different feel than the rest of the songs and more hardcore. I could go on and on about each of the songs, but I really want you to discover each for yourself. I am honored when I came to Grey Daze with the idea of doing an article for them! I wanted to pay my own tribute and awareness to a great band Chester once was in. What brought out the talent we know and loved. Now on to the interview so you can hear in their own words what this band and music is all about! Thank you so much and rock on! \m/

Interview with Grey Daze

1. Tell us more about the history of Grey Daze? Many changes since the mid 90s!

I joined prior to the No Sun Today release .  When I joined the group after the wake me CD, Jason Barnes was the guitar player, who , for personal reasons, left the group. In the 90s  Bobby Benish auditioned and nailed it really quickly.

But back to the more modern day , Bobby had already passed years ago and we were organizing the Grey Daze reunion show in Tempe,  Sean and Chester brought in Chesters high school friend Cristin  to play live with us. Cristin has since officially joined the band and is a great addition, we love having his energy in the studio with all the new stuff. So right now the band has Me and Sean as surviving members, Cristin on guitar.

2. Music has changed through time as always.  Would you like to see grunge have its come back?

Music reflects whats happening in society at the time. If we were to go back to the grunge of the nineties we would have to go back to the mental state society was in. I hope society learns from its past and builds on itself with each iteration just like music always has.

3. What bands influenced you through time?

I'm very fortunate to have discovered my path in life very early , i knew i was going to be a musician since i was about 7years old.  You see, my father had a record store in NJ from 68-88', and i used to get my weekly allowance from chores paid out in records.. i remember the first kinda rock and roll songs i heard -- before my nuts dropped -- was The Beatles "mr postman" and "im not your stepping stone" by the monkeys . After i heard that, I decided i wanted to be on a record not listening to it.

As far as bass influences--   Geezer of black sabbath, Paul Mcartny of the beatles , Bootsy Collins of the funkadelics, Les Claypool, Flea from chilli peppers and of coarse Donald "Duck" Dunn the session player for the great soul RnB label  stax in the 70's.

4. Tell us more about your recent plans? Should we expect a new album?

We have enough material for another record, Yes.

5. Tell me more about your newest single "Soul Song"? How surreal was it to have Jamie on set of the video and in the studio?

Having Jamie in the studio for the backing vocals was beautiful, it was a positive day and a wonderful experience. We recorded everything at NRG studios, where his father recorded most of his iconic work. He was even using the same microphone Chester recorded some of his biggest hits on,  it all kinda came full circle , it was a beautiful thing man.  In a way that song and that moment were exactly the spiritual connection, and healing process that this album is meant to be.

6. Since my son Noah was a toddler he has listened to Chester's music. Now at 17 I'd like him to know what was Chester like back in my generation the 90s when I was his age?

When you see old or more recent videos of him joking around and smiling, he had never changed.  He never changed, always forever the funny guy in the room since i knew him.

7. Can you tell me more about the " I am the Change" I have seen for Chester?

Chester's Lyrics helped his fans dealing with depression and mental illness for decades , anything that keeps that spirit alive honors him.

we are living in wild times and if anyone is having difficulty coping they should remember that they are loved and worth it.

8. If you had a new musician come up to you for advice, what would it be?

If i had one blanket statement about who you are going to work with or joina  band wiht and form those relationships.

I would say Better is not always Better, pick the best all round human, someone can always get better at an instrument but assholes tend to stay assholes.

9. Through time making music to this day, what is your favorite to play?

I would say  playing ZZtop style texas-blues on my stand up bass is the most fun because its the most challenging.

10. Is there anything else you'd like me to add that's I didn't in the interview?

Although bittersweet, musically and spiritually, this has been one of the most fulfilling times of my life, working with all of the beautiful talents and souls that have made this album happen has been an amazing journey bringing my past into my future.

Everything we do, we do in tribute to chester.
