Here is the band for our first Local Band Spotlight! Traverse The Abyss is out of Scranton, PA, and played local gigs in my area. I'm sorry I missed them, because I bet their brutal live! They've come a long way with making it into the Top 10 with their local Radio Station Contest. Congratulations to you guys by the way!! Next2Rock,  is a contest where they can potentially get signed and possibly work with WWE/Fozzy Chris Jericho & Jonathan Davis of Korn! In my book is pretty cool!  Eric says, "Live performance is on 8/25 at Thirst Ts in Olyphant, one band will be our area's winner and advance to the national review panel, and 5 of them get flown out to Cali for finale performance."

Bio:The interpretation TtA took on this is to pass through seemingly endless dark times in life, always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Traverse the Abyss is a heavy metal band from Scranton, Pennsylvania. Traverse the Abyss formed in 2016 and current line up is Eric Abyss (Vocals), "Iron" MIke White (Guitar), MIke "Bnoc" Bieniecki (Bass/Backing Vocals), Matt Mierzejewski (Guitar) & Nathan Cardona (Drums).

Traverse the Abyss debuted onto the music scene on October 1st, 2016 with the lyric video for the single "One of a Kind" a modern metal song with positive self empowering lyrics and a consistent thundering drive throughout the song. On November 26th, 2016, Traverse the Abyss followed up with the self release of the debut album "The Gamble of Life".
The Gamble of Life represents the highs, lows, and unpredictability you will encounter in everyday life demonstrated by incorporating sub genres all over the Metal spectrum including Metalcore, Thrash Metal, Nu-Metal, Death Metal and even venturing off into the regions of Pop Punk, Punk Rock, Hard Rock, Rap and more to create a beastly, direct, in-your-face approach to modern metal.

In 2017, Traverse the Abyss became an endorsed artist of veteran companies Spector Bass and Dirtbag Clothing, alongside releasing a music video for the single "Dead Weight" and the song "Battle Cry".

Their new Album comes out on August 24th! Look out for it and buy it it's seriously amazing!!

Tri Tones Interview!

1.Tell me a bit about the band that you’re in?

Answer: 1. Thank you for having me and I love the magazine name by the way!

Describing my band I guess is easiest to say that I am a Metal Solo Artist. I write and play all instruments. As well as write all lyrics and sing all vocals. I’ve become for lack of better phrase, a digital performer. My latest album “This Is The Point” I recorded, mixed and mastered on my own. I created my first solo album at 13 years old so it’s nothing new for me although I’ve been in many bands over the years and Tri Tones was once a 3 piece band me and my bro started back in ‘06. This is my first official solo release.  Putting myself in the shoes of each instrument has it task. But it’s much more fun than the dramas of the typical “band”. I’ve always wrote mixed genres of metal or rock music. I like to shake things up. I’m not much for tunnel vision art, I try to write music that can appeal to every emotion, memory or feeling. I like a lot of genres and music in general and that reflects in my songs. I think of music as a bridge to wholeness and unity. Whether your the listener or performer. My music can be looked at in a way that although it’s rock or metal mostly, each song has its on feel or style. “Seeing Clearer” is a great representation of that.

2.I really like your song “Deep Within You”, What is the meaning behind the song?

Answer:2.Deep Within You” is a song that has meanings within meanings, death in multiples. As well the end of old ways, quarrels and the loss of loved ones. Leaning to those close for support or isolating for comfort. Though we move on past cycles or lessons, the memory that shapes us always remains deep within you. Giving up, yet a voice of positive reason helps you to push through. Lastly, it’s being the last person to see loved ones just before their passing. Wishing to trade places. Being the last to show up before the new beginning begins and the ending ends.

3.There are many bands that influenced me! I have a great love for music. What is some of your influences, and why?

Answer:3. I could say a lot of bands, groups or artist. I have influences from the 50’s to today. Probably even earlier. But the most influential for me recently has been Romania’s “Goodbye To Gravity”. The singer won Romania’s version of the voice and I love the fact he was a metal guy. His voice matched perfect with the bands music. Unfortunately tragedy struck on their CD release show where many people and members died sadly. Their album Mantras Of War is one of my recent favorite albums I keep on repeat. Check out Shadow Puppets! Plus all album proceeds goes to the families of those lost.

4.What is your all-time favorite song from another band? Why and what is the best memory of it?

Answer:4.Picking one song is hard to do. I’m an album person. I like to indulge. I can break it down to about 5 albums off the top of my head.

-Nevermind

-AntiChrist Superstar

-Aenima

-Iowa

-40z to freedom

5.What is your favorite song from the band to play?

Answer:5.  My go to song these days is “Relearn or Number Eye”. Mostly because they stick to the surprise factor I like to mess with in my music. I like the flow of the changes and the challenge in the vocals.

Zero Hour, which is not streamable on all platforms yet used to be because any one willing to come on stage with us during the song was invited. It would get crazy sometimes..

6.If you had another musician/band ask you for advice, what would you tell them?

Answer:6.  Do what’s true to you and what sets you free. Everybody will have an opinion, stick to your heart.

7.There’s a lot of views on people using their cellphones at a concert. What’s your opinion on this?

Answer: 7 . I don’t mind phones. But if your constantly filming the whole show I do think it takes away from the experience of the moment. It’s subjective.. I like to get a clip of a song or two when I go to shows. But, honestly, how often do we really go back and watch those videos on our phones? I find that the memory means more.

8.There’s been a lot of buzz of when hearing through articles and at concerts.  That’s people aren’t going to live events and concerts. Have you seen a difference touring, and what is your feelings on the issue?

Answer: 8.  I watched this begin years ago. Shows have changed, society has changed. It’s become such a digital world. Music has kind of lost the importance it once had, I think. People lack the time to “lose themselves” in music the way they once did, due to less time and the gaps of “nothing to do” are now filled with social media, games, googling or realizing 3 hours later YouTube’s related videos sent you down a worm hole. The music market is still very much alive, unfortunately the live experience is not seen in the same way and lacks value to the common person.

9.Is there anything else you would like to add or wanna say to the people who will be reading this?

Answer: 9. Yes! Check out my new album “This Is The Point”. It is available to stream and download everywhere. Check out my YouTube channel for music videos and lyric videos. Also, I’m releasing several singles soon. Follow my Facebook and Twitter for more updates. I do everything so it takes a bit more time running the whole 9 yards alone.

Thank you very much Music Guru and Jennifer Cook for inviting me. I and many others really appreciate what your doing! I hope we do it again in the future! \m/

My next Local Band Spotlight is Tri Tones, as soon as I heard him I was hooked! It sounded different from other bands/music. Which lately I've been known to want to hear"different" music. He's touchy and I haven't stopped listening yet. Every time I'm in the car, I am blasting it!! The first song that caught my eye is "From Within", which surprised Stephen the band member. I found the mix of electronics, hard drums, his soft vocal to heavier, and the brutal beat mesmerizing! You gotta try out blasting it it's even better!! All the songs I've heard from Tri Tones gets you energized and ready for anything.  My next favorites are "Number Eye", "Tired of You People" and "Deep Within You" all heavy as hell. I like how there's stringed instruments in "Deep Within You" and mixed with thundering drums and bass. I do really like The 60's and heavy metal feel in "This is the Point". I had to add that as i just heard it. In his vocals I love he can do singing and growling in one song. I have always loved that mix in a song, and it keeps you on your toes! Thank you Stephen for letting me review your music, and turning me on to it!! Also one of my first interviews that I have done so far!!

Sickbay

September 10th 2018

My third entry for Local Band Spotlight, the first of many New York State bands.  Which is my state I live! I plan on going state by state and country by country for local bands near you. The guitarist Jim Sinon of Sickbay asked me to do a review and interview. I was like sure why wouldn't I. :] I wanted to get to know Death Metal more too anyway. Which is pretty cool for New York State.  As I listen to their whole album, "Bound for Tragedy", I liked "Pulse of Disdain" right from the start. I think taste in music is getting heavier, and more wide open in metal genres.  I really liked the guitar riffs in the background, and also the deep sounding gritty guitar throughout. I hear my dark side in "Dust", and fell roaming a cemetery as I listen. This song is slow and somber with low guitars that thunder. I overall gained a lot of knowledge of Death Metal, and what it entitles. Thank you so much Jim and Sickbay for asking me to review your music.

Sickbay Interview

1.Tell me a bit about the band that you’re in?

Answer:1.Our band is called Sickbay we are a Death Metal/Hardcore Band, I think we cross through a bunch of sub genres at some point its all metal. We are from Beacon

NY. We released an EP called "Bound for Tragedy" earlier in the spring.

     We are

                Tom Peluso  Bass and vocals

                Joe Merando Drums

                Jim Sinon      Guitar

2.What is it like to have a Death Metal band or any band in New York state?

Answer:2. It's awesome to be a band in New York. We are very fortunate to be from the Hudson Valley which has a thriving Metal/Hardcore scene. There are a lot of really good bands so its hard to stand out with so much talent, but it pushes you to be better. It is always a good time playing gigs because your usually playing with bands you like. There is also a lot of venues to play and a lot of national bands come through the area and have local bands as support on the bill.

3.There are many bands that influenced me! I have a great love for music. What is some of your influences, and why?

Answer:3. With a gun to our head Joe says Slip Knot, Tom says Black Sabbath and I say Black Sabbath also. Its a tough question because I grew up through the 80s when the metal scene was exploding so it was a progression from Sabbath to Iron Maiden. Then Metallica and Slayer to bands like Obituary and Death. Crowbar and Machine Head have also been influences. Its always been the next heavier band and that motivates me to be heavier as well.

4.What is your all-time favorite song from another band? Why and what is the best memory of it?

Answer: 4. Simple question but hard to answer. I think South of Heaven from Slayer. I've heard it a million times but it still gets my blood pumping and every time I hear it, I still yell out "you must Die" and bang my head.

5.What is your favorite song from the band to play?

Answer:5.  "Haunted". The groove part in the song is fun to jam.

6.If you had another musician/band ask you for advice, what would you tell them?

Answer:6. That they're probably asking the wrong person. It's been a long life sometimes tying my shoes is problematic, ha-ha. I would say that you have to love what you're doing or it's not worth doing. Trying to force music doesn't work well and you gotta have thick skin and perseverance. You also have to believe in what you do and shrug off the criticism and the rejection. There is a lot of both with any part of the music business on any level.

7.There’s a lot of views on people using their cellphones at a concert. What’s your opinion on this?

Answer:7. I think it's a shame that people miss out on the experience of a live show, but it's a problem in society in general. People are missing out on real life experiences and conversation. They are not taking in what's actually going on around them and missing out on a lot. Some people see it as disrespectful, I figure if someone doesn't want to pay attention it's their loss. It doesn't really affect me. They paid for their ticket  and if they want to miss the show, its on them.

8.There’s been a lot of buzz of when hearing through articles and at concerts.  That’s people aren’t going to live events and concerts. Have you seen a difference touring, and what is your feelings on the issue?

Answer:8. It is a huge difference. 15 or 20 years ago if there was any kind of show at most venues there was a line to get in and people showed up. Today isn't the same , it's hard to get people to come out. They would rather see it on their phone the next day or on a social media outlet live while its happening. It used to be how you found or heard new music, plus you were missing out on something. The internet has taken those things out of the equation. You can find music from anywhere at any time and you never  have to miss anything  because you can just Google it the next day. I think it's a shame because there is no replacement for live music. The volume and the energy that you get from live music cannot be replaced.  There's no comparison from a double bass beating into your chest and having no choice but to be consumed with the sound and a crappy speaker on an iPhone or a laptop. Plus you will be missing out on the little things like the smell, the sights and the people, which make up the whole product good or bad.

9.Is there anything else you would like to add or wanna say to the people who will be reading this?

Answer:9. First of all we would like to thank you for giving us a platform and thank any reader for taking the time to read this interview. We talked about the downside of the internet but the upside is being able to reach people near and far so that our music can be listened to from anywhere. Social media makes it easier to reach our audience so they are able to hear our music and follow what the band is up to. So click the link, give it a spin, turn up the volume and bang your head! So this is How It Ends

October 16th 2018

Here's my 4th entry for local bands, So This is How it Ends is a local band for sure for me! Their based out of Syracuse, NY only a few hours away from me. They play at my favorite venues like Lost Horizon and The Westscott.  They released their latest album "D(r)ead" in August. I would love to say I am very impressed to have a NY Deadcore that is that good.  I do hope I get to see them for their November 2nd show at the Westscott.  I bet they thunder the place live, and I'll have to watch by the Pit!! Outside the danger zone! I love their first song on the album "Downfall" with the creepy electric sounds at the beginning, and followed by thrashing guitar and vocals. The next song is the name of the album "D(r)ead" which I would love to hear live with the thundering music it has. It's amazing in my car so I bet it's even better in real speakers!! Makes it hard for me to write, because i can't help but head bang! Which doesn't stop at "Question" comes to play, and as usual I love when a vocalist can song and growl with the best of them in their songs!! The two other songs on the album is "Empty" and "Undone". I still love them also, and makes it so there is not a song I do not like on here. I must thank Brandon Mitchell (a guitarist in the band) for bring this band to my attention in one of my FB posts for finding bands! They will be playing live on November 2nd we play with Whitechapel in Syracuse at The Westscott, and November 17th we play with Life Barrier in Rochester. Please check them out, and you might see me there!!

Faced

January 22nd 2019

My first installment for the new year! I bring you another NY state local band from Albany,NY! Their name is Faced! Albany is really popular for their Black and Death Metal, and this band does not let you down. Off their first album released in late 2018 Death Trip, if you like it heavy and major growling you come to the right band. There is amazing guitar riffs and double bass drum style in their self titled Faced song.  Has a classic heavy metal feel on the death end of music!! Speaking of drums! Mushroom in the Night and Melting Walz has fantastic drums I'd so watch if I saw them live! Holy banging batman! Love it!! Sheet Music has great guitar solos and the lead singer is a phenomenal vocalist with his metal growls. Trust Was broken, I love how it starts out slow and turns to brutal! You can almost feel the pain and anger as it changes!! This one is a favorite, because how it's shows what they can do. Not just one yelling and screaming! I do love heavier the better! If you do too then you'll love Faced!! I am proud to know they come from my state's capital! I love to have local bands I can truly support! I want our local metal scene to flourish, and these guys and many others can bring Metal back to our state!! Their whole album is brutal and awesome! I only name a few song off their first album! Please do give the rest of their music a listen, and judge for yourself! No disappointment!!!

Tale Of A Monster

tale of a monster.jpg

May 15th 2019

This month local band review is Tale of a Monster. Pretty new band in my area of 315 area code. Just a few weeks ago they had their debut show at the 12 North Sports Bar in Marcy, NY on April 26th. My reviewer Aaron Duerr did the show review for me! Wish I could of went still was healing from surgery. Thank you guys for everything!

Aaron's review of their debut show

Aaron really enjoyed going and also seeing No Way Home, A Greater Danger, and Beside The Sun. His overall thoughts of the show was amazing night! Big crowd of familiar and new faces! Lots of energy and all the bands did amazing and supported each other! No Way Home started the night off but unfortunately I missed they're set, I arrived right after they got off stage which I was upset about. A Greater Danger was up next and brought the energy and got the crowd going. Fred Turner is an amazing guitarist and back up vocalist and really knows how to get the crowd going! Beside The Sun was up next and both calmed and for sure got the crowd going all and one set! They are different from a lot of the other local bands around as they know how to be heavy, melodic, rymthmic, and even a little bit of hip hop. Last up was the headliner Tale Of A Monster! This was they're debut performance and let me tell you what, you wouldn't know it by how great and tight they sounded. You can tell they practiced they're asses off to make the night great! My only complaint with they're set is they only had 5 songs to play lol I asked him so you wanted more :) His answer, Tale Of A Monster hands down! Damon Koscinski was the front man of my favorite local band After Earth that unfortunately split a few years ago, so I had to see what his new band had to offer and I definitely wasn't disappointed one bit! One of his favorite parts of the show was when they played "Henchman" from After Earth and Damon got right in Aaron's face during crowd surfing.

                                                                                                                                     Written by Jennifer Cook/Phoenix Ravenmoon

                                                                                                                                                       Reviewed by Aaron Duerr

Tale of A Monster Interview

1. Please tell me more about your band?

Tale of a Monster has been a project in the works for drummer Anthony Hirsch for quite some time. After reconnecting with Damon, Billy, and Philip, the band really began to take shape. You get a taste of everyone’s unique style and they all compliment each other very well. Adding Melody on vocals really solidifies the sound that is Tale of a Monster.

2. What is your favorite song to play on stage?

We each have our own favorites, if you’re asking Damon, he would say “Something More”. It’s a great blend of Damon and Melody on vocals, and has that in your face sound.

3. What is the best part playing at a show?

Damon: “Personally for me, the best part about playing live is connecting with the fans. I love commanding the crowd and making them feel part of the show!”

4. Favorite reaction from the crowd so far?

We’ve only just played our debut performance, but we’d have to say when we pulled out an old song from our past catalog, the crowd really enjoyed it! It’s such a humble feeling when you hear people screaming your lyrics!

5. If you met a new musician, what advice would you give him or her starting or being in a band?

Go for it. Don’t let anything hold you back! You only get one shot to make it happen and if it’s your dream, chase it. Good things happen to those that work hard.

6. What bands influenced you?

Such a tough question, there’s 6 of us so our influences are ALL over the place. We love all types of music, therefore we get our influences from everyone.

7. Tell me a little about your new album?

Currently we are in the midst of writing our album. We return to the studio in June and are very excited to have more music coming!

8. Future plans that your excited about? Like your bus ride to your Lost Horizon show with Texas Hippie Coalition.

NorthMen

June 18th 2019

I will never forget the first time I heard of NorthMen. I was doing a project for my JCC college computer course a year ago. Of course my PowerPoint was on a metal band, Korn! A classmate brought up NorthMen to check out. I did and was happy to see a local from Watertown, NY. Which I made now, my local band spotlight for June 2019! Thank you Tag Publicity and Song River for helping me do this interview. Their latest song "Forevermore" is very good, and sounds like old school metal! Sounds like what I always used to listen to in my younger years! I hope you enjoy their interview! Please give them a listen and support!!

Bio from Press Release: http://bit.ly/2I97NJE

Formed in the winter of 2015, The Northmen is a metal/hard rock quartet with a mind to conquer like those of their namesake. With a combination of heart pounding drums, dual guitar harmonies, aggressive riffs, and a healthy nod to the guitar solo- The Northmen set out to achieve one thing; a unique, original sound with relentless energy.

NorthMen Interview

1. Tell me a bit about the band Northmen?

We are a hard rock/heavy metal band from Watertown NY. Jeremy and Matt formed the band back in 2015 and Brendan and myself joined in 2017.

2. Where did the name of the band come from?

Our singer Jeremy is a big Game of Thrones fan so that had a role in the name as well as the fact that we are from upstate New York.

3. What is it like to have a Metal band or any band in your area?

Watertown is pretty diverse when it comes to the music scene. Everyone seems to be very supportive of one another, and there really isn’t another band with our style in the area so it helps us to stand out.

4.There are many bands that influenced me! I have a great love for music. What is some of your influences, and why?

There are so many bands that have influenced us throughout our lives. Collectively the biggest influences for the whole band would have to be bands like Metallica, Bullet for my Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold.

5.What is your all-time favorite song from another band? Why and what is the best memory of it?

That’s probably one of the most difficult questions to answer. Personally I’d say anything by Aerosmith, mostly because that’s my earliest memory of hearing rock n roll for the first time. When I first heard sweet emotion I knew I wanted to be a musician and play just like those guys.

6.What is your favorite song from the band to play?

Besides some of the new material we haven’t released yet my favorite song in our set is currently Shadow of Man, it’s a very upbeat and in your face song and seems to be a crowd favorite.

7. If you had another musician/band ask you for advice, what would you tell them?

Don’t stop wanting it. It’s not an easy decision to make wanting to really pursue this as a career. If you want it bad enough and you work hard enough it’s easier to take the steps it takes to keep moving forward. I think one of the most important things to always remind yourself is to never stop creating, and make sure you enjoy what you’re doing.

8. Tell us about your newest music and album?

We’ve got a ton of new music coming soon and these songs have all four of our influences behind them so you’ll hear some new styles compared to some of the older material.

9. Where can we find you playing live?

We have quite a few shows booked through the next few months. You can catch us in our hometown, Syracuse, Rochester, and we will be making our way to Pennsylvania again in a couple months.

10. Anything else you'd like me to add I haven't asked?

I think we covered most of it, just be sure to follow us on our social media pages to see our progress on the upcoming music and tour plans.

Devinity Reign

July 22nd 2019

On my Facebook page, I asked for lady involved local bands. I got a huge response, and this band got a repeat one. I found them new and fresh. With their first album about to be released August 10th 2019 at their new CD release party at the Lost Horizon. Which I gratefully expected to attend!  The name of the album is "Sirens", and the band is Devinity Reign. The lead vocalist and guitarist is Cait Devin with her soft but powerful presence, and also in the band, Zachary Korman also on Guitar, Mike Balfe Drums, and Seth Savage on Bass.  From upstate NY, they bring their own feel to Heavy Metal with a energetic performance on stage.  Their album maybe out next month, but I very much wanted to get the word out ahead! Be the first to promote this local band! They are very active live band so go see them live! They will also be at a very local festival in my area at Turin,NY at Snow Ridge Resort! It a two day fest starting on 26th. So check them out, and please go to their Release party at Lost Horizon on August 10th!  Aaron and I will be there to rock them on!! More to come from them on Music Guru Magazine after!!

Interview with Devinity Reign and Cait Devin

1. Tell me a little about your band Devinity Reign?

We are a heavy rock band out of CNY.  We like to put our own spin on every song, but we're really focusing in on our originals!

2. Cait Devin, tell me a little about your own singing solo too?

It's very different from the full band. During my solo shows, I usually resort to well known rock and even blues songs. I would consider myself a very indie acoustic singer songwriter at heart even though I always have my electric with me. I just really enjoy putting a heavy spin on everything, indie acoustic or not! I like to rock out.

3. When is your new album release, and about your album?

Our EP is called Sirens and will be released later this month. We have a music video coming out around the same time for our single "Gone." It was recorded at the Gear Factory in Syracuse- really cool spot! As far as the sound of the album goes, we had a lot of different influences. While staying modern rock, we definitely had a lot of 80's and 90's inspiration such as Metallica and the Cranberries.

4. What's your first song release, and is that about?

We will be releasing all four EP songs at once. Putting it all out there full force! However, we'll really be pushing the promotion of "Gone" since it is the first song off the record to have its own video.

5. What bands influenced you to play music?

A wide variety. A few I can name right off the top of my head are Metallica, the Cranberries, Iron Maiden, and Alice Cooper. Our heavier side has been compared to bands like Halestorm and New Years Day.

6. Where can we find you live?

All events can be found on our facebook page @devinityreign - We encourage everyone to come rock with us August 10 at our CD release at the Lost Horizon! We are headlining and have presale tickets up for grabs.

7. As a woman lead have you ever ran into troubles in a music career?

Sure! Not only do I sing in the band, but I do a lot of lead guitar work as well (alongside my AMAZING guitarist Zach Korman) and being a chick with an electric, people will always have stuff to say. Such as, "girls should only be playing acoustics, why is she up there shredding?" Well... because I like it. That's why.

8. What can you tell other women who want to break out into the music world?

Promote your music. Always, don't be shy about it.

9. What is it like touring and having a band in New York State?

Usually when I travel out for shows, it is me solo. But I plan to take the band with me in the future, when we all find time to do so! We're very committed to reaching out and expanding our fan base.

10. Is there anything I left out you'd like me to add?
Horns up! :)

September 17th 2019

I was first turned on to the band Ecliptic Vision by Walter and Ginger Al from Cranium Radio! I'll admit before these fellows I didn't listen to Death or Black metal.  But throughout time doing the magazine and working with Cranium Radio my taste has changed. Ecliptic Vision is one of my first Death metal bands I do love!! Great local band out of Syracuse, and a pleasure to meet Josh at Lost Horizon!! Can't wait to be working with you at my show dude!!  Their new self titled album was released July 2019. I listened to all 12 songs off the latest, and I must say it will melt your face!! All of the songs are freaking amazing! You'll see in the interview which is my favorite! I can't wait to work with you guys more at a later date! You make me proud to know you and say you are a local band to NY state!! Brutal metal that needs to be heard!!

Interview with Ecliptic Vision

1. Please tell me a bit about the band?

Ecliptic Vision is death metal from Syracuse, New York. We are a culmination of years of passion and devotion to extreme metal in all forms, fusing technicality, groove, and raw aggression to create our sound. Over the years we have had the honor and privilege to share the stage with some of our greatest musical inspirations such as Suffocation, Cattle Decapitation, Dying Fetus, Immolation, Origin, Decrepit Birth, the Cavalera Bros, Carnifex, Thy Art is Murder, Revocation, Destruction, and Havok to name a few.

Since the origin of Ecliptic Vision, we have thrown ourselves completely at every aspect of our band, from promotion, spreading our sound around central New York, but most importantly our music. To date, we have self released our full length album "Dissimilar Dimensions", our  EP "Omphalos of the Void", and most recently our new self-titled full length album, all of which are available to stream on our website and all music streaming platforms.

2. How did you get the name for the band?

The name Ecliptic Vision was created in the early years of the band when it was only Ryan and Derek (guitar & bass) - Originally two names that were considered were “Altered Visions” and “Whispering Eclipse” which both eventually ended up evolving into “Ecliptic Vision”.

3. Tell me a bit about your newest album?

Our forthcoming self-titled album “Ecliptic Vision” is the culmination of our experience and growth as musicians individually and collectively as a band coming together to cultivate the most complete evolution of our sound. Since the origins of Ecliptic Vision, we have come to be known for a signature heavy groove which forms the foundation of our sound, and in bringing this record to life we elevated that groove to the next level. We pushed the boundaries of our playing and composition into new territory, cutting no corners and devoting attention to every element of the music and the overall presentation of it. We collaborated with Matthew Jaime of the Syracuse noise outfit Machine Moon, whose ambient talents brought a further level of atmospheric depth to the record, and worked closely with Justin Spaulding of More Sound Studio who was instrumental in capturing our vision to the fullest extent. What we ended up with are 12 tracks that take the listener on a fluid, sonic journey yet each stand alone with their own soul and vibe. Each moment is a unique expression of our sound while remaining true to it’s roots, which is ultimately what makes this record sound definitively like Ecliptic Vision.

4. One of my favorites songs off the album is "Cosmicosm". Interesting name, what is it about?

That’s one of our favorites as well. The overall theme of the song lyrically is focused around an abstract celestial force imposing its will on the universe. Our vocalist Josh is the mastermind behind the lyrics, especially on the new album which he created all of the lyrics for.

5. When on stage what is your favorite song to play?

It’s honestly tough to pinpoint one specific song as a favorite live. We have always tried to keep a good mix of fresh, new material in our live shows while including some of our older, more well known tracks. At this point, I think I can speak for everyone in saying that really playing any of the new material off of our new record is our favorite now just because it reflects us musically as a band. We will always have a soft spot for the older stuff as well, but as most any band would say, their newest music is the most accurate representation of them at that point in time.

6.  What music or bands that influenced you the most?

We have all individually as musicians and collectively as a band been influenced by the roots of classic death metal where we pull many elements of our sound, also deriving influence from some elements of more modern extreme metal. We’ve never set out to model our music after any specific bands, but ultimately our sound is a culmination of the elements of classic and modern death metal, with a focus on heavy groove that provides the foundation for everything else.

7. What was the hardest part of starting a band?

The most challenging aspect of starting and continuing a band is always finding the right pieces, not only for that moment but over the long term. It’s not all that difficult to find someone that can play bass, guitar, drums etc. and call it a band. The real challenge comes in taking all of that and collectively being on the same page, pushing towards the same vision or goal with the same intensity over a period of time. It’s very easy for just one link in that chain to weaken and cause things to fall apart, which is a very common reason for the ending of bands. In that respect, we are very fortunate and grateful to have the group of guys in Ecliptic Vision, because from the beginning we’ve been tight, maintaining our original vision for our music and persevering through everything we’ve encountered along the way.

8. Where can we find you on tour next?

Our next two shows coming up are September 14, 2019 at Buffalo Metal Fest (Woodlawn Beach) & October 19, 2019 at Headbanger’s Halloween taking place at the Bug Jar in Rochester.

9. Is there anything you'd like to add that I have not?

In addition to saying thank you for taking the time to interview us, we would just like to extend our deepest thanks to our listeners; the people who have believed in and supported Ecliptic Vision since day one. Because of their collective support, we have been able to go further and accomplish more on this journey than any of us ever dreamed or imagined. Being able to compose, record and release our most recent full length record was a humbling and incredibly rewarding experience, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunities we’ve had to showcase our sound over the years.

Symmetrical Defiance

Band

Joshua Franchi......Vocals
Rexx McGee..........Guitar

Jon Herrala............Bass
Evan Da Gray.........Drums

October 16th 2019

Throughout my magazine career I have heard of and listened to Symmetrical Defiance. But to see them live sweetened the deal. As I mentioned in the concert review when I saw them on August 10th at Lost Horizon, " Their performance was incredible!!  Josh made you feel you were apart of the show. That he was there only for you for each person there. You pulled me in for sure and I gave full attention! I must add pretty brutal mask dude!  The whole band worked well and rocked together!  I would love to see you guys again, and want you to play in my next show for sure!!" As for their album "Chrysalis", I really feel is amazing and can't wait to hear more from them! My favorite song is the first song off the album and self titles "Chrysalis" and recognized it quickly live!  Another song I simply love is "Waiting in the Shadows"! There is three more great songs on the album also, and very worthy to check out all of them!!  The whole band does well together and brutally harmonizes with greatness!  Josh growls like a fury with a deepness and intense vocals!  They were founded in Rome, NY in 2015. I love the way they say what they're all about, "Our vehicle is metal and our message is simple: rattle the cage, question the norm and with our peers, take the metal scene by storm.". I would have to agree with that statement!! Thank you guys for everything, and being a great friend! I will never forget you, and can't wait for future encounters with you!!

\m/ Written by Jennifer Cook/Phoenix Ravenmoon

Interview with Symmetrical Defiance

1. Tell me more about your band?

Its simple we play music. We rattle the cage and twist the normal to take the music scene by storm with our followers!

2. How did you guys get started?

Honestly right now the only original member left is our vocalist. Everyone has left for various reasons. We got started as Symmetrical Defiance when our vocalist was looking for a band and the add was answered by former guitarist Lyle Moon. They started all jamming and the rest is history. Josh our vocalist has just kept it going along side the guys in the band now and the former members.

3. Tell me about your newest album?

Well, we are working on our full length and have about 5 songs in the world right now for it. The EP that's our now on all media streaming platforms is Chysalis. Its a small concept ep. It tells a story via imagery and metaphors. We didn't intend to have this happen it just kind of did once the lyrics were being wrote. It happened all organically and honestly we are pretty proud of it. The idea of having each song be it's own and all of the songs somehow coinciding with one another is something that will continue with the LP.

4. The song "Waiting in the Shadows", what is it all about?
WAITING IN THE SHADOWS is about the demons inside and what happens the instant they take over. Also it is the next step in the prophecy of sorts. Being that the condemned depressed individual is letting it come out and cleansing.

5. What bands influenced you?

We all collectively have a bunch of different influences our bassist Jon loves Ghost, Opeth, 90s rock among others. Rexx our guitarist loves Behemoth and The Black Dahlia Murder. Evan our drummer loves Lamb of God, all jam bands, and 80s metal. Josh our vocalist listens too everything from FORCES, Billy Idol, Devildriver,Halsey, 80s metal and more. Everyone in the band has a vast musical library and that helps with our sound and writing.

6. Where can we find you live?

We play all over NY. We have also played in PA and this coming year we are trying to branch out to hit up some east coast spots. You can find out whole list of shows at:  https://www.bandsintown.com/a/10484264?came_from=206

7. Performing live, what would you say is your favorite part?
Watching the faces and people that enjoy and move to our music.

8. Where would you like to see yourself in the future? Your plans?
We want to play major festivals and record our studio album. Everything else is a bonus.

9. If you had a chance to thank anyone who would it be?
Everyone who has been there for us. Past present and future.

Special thanks too:

Front IX Films & Photography for the photos and the using our EP as the music for the film Thesis. Our vocalist, ex bassist and guitarist were also in the film so be sure to check that out. It will be due out to the public around Halloween 2019!
