Here's another one of my DJ friends Ginger Al at Cranium Radio! He is stationed at more my area in Northern NY. His Time to listen to his show is Friday nights at 7pm thru 10pm Eastern time. We have the same thoughts on opening the doors for local bands, and help get them seen! "I recognize that the healthier your local scene, the more that we open up the doors for more people to be musically creative." He's been DJing for over a year, and have been music advocate. For many years used music to keep him sane! I hear you bud cause so do I! Music is the best therapy in life, and the soundtrack of your soul! He also pointed out that, "I've been a metal head since I was 8, when my dads buddy gave me the cassette for GnR appetite for Destruction. And then Metallica's And Justice for All broke me into heavier metal, and I've been there ever since." I can't wait to see you at more shows, and listen to your show on the radio! Thank you for all you do! Was great meeting you!!

For my second creative artist installment, I would like to include John Harris that was also apart of my Musician Spotlight January addition. I noticed on Facebook he also does pretty excellent jewelry too! I had no choice, and gladly wanted to add his designs here. Brought my attention to Syracuse, NY has a fashion week, and where he is also based out of. I myself make jewelry but no where near how well he creates his! Right up my alley, I would love to wear myself! I always love to support local businesses, and my fellow crafters. Also, JPHii DESIGN is going through a massive overhaul and is expected to re-launch in October. I can't wait to see what comes next! Thanks John!!

A bit of history behind how JPHii got started from John himself.....

JPHii DESIGN was founded in 2010 after a massive spike in requests for custom orders. Founded with the help of 3 independent business and research grants, JPHii DESIGN ranked in the Top 10 Independent Jewelry Design Firms in the United States in 2012 and ranked in the Top 5 Independent Jewelry Design Firms in the United States in both 2013 and 2014, falling out of reach of the independent rankings due to national and international retail contracts in late 2014.
In 2012, John Harris graduated from Buffalo State College with a BFA in Jewelry Design along with a BA in Anthropology with minors in Religious Studies and Forensic Anthropology. Also in 2012, John Harris' manuscript for The True Survivors was published (ISBN 1105564010) and in 2013, JPHii DESIGN opened its first studio in Lancaster, NY with 5 employees and numerous national and international clients.
In 2012, John Harris was one of the founders of the largest Halloween party in Buffalo, NY: The Witch's Ball. This event, over John's three year run on the administrative board, pulled in 3,000+ people annually and increased JPHii DESIGN's visibility. In 2013, John was also the co-founder of the annual Medina Steampunk Festival at Leonard Oakes Estate Winery in Medina, NY which pulled an average of 7,000 people from all over the north east, increasing JPHii DESIGN's presence in the Steampunk and Goth communities.
In 2012, JPHii DESIGN appeared in numerous Buffalo Fashion Week runway sets, and in 2013, JPHii DESIGN's jewelry was used to accent designers like Dario Mohr and Omi Roriguez (SaiOne) in runway shows in Atlanta Fashion Week, NY Fashion Week's Mercedes Benz runway show, Toronto Fashion, Houston Fashion Week, and Boston Fashion Week. In 2013, JPHii DESIGN went through a re-branding steering slightly less towards the Steampunk aesthetic. At the same time, JPHii DESIGN's jewelry was used to accent the costumes in Emil Novak's Frankenstein's Patchwork Monster, and JPHii DESIGN served as the lead set design agency for the film. In 2013, John Harris also joined the Entrepreneurship in the Arts lecture tour for the SUNY system, traveling and doing panel discussions with aspiring professional artists all over the state. John continued to do this tour on and off through October 2017, and often spoke to middle and high school classes on the side. In 2015, John appeared on numerous national radio shows including United Pagan Radio and Open Eyes Network to discuss different Anthropological topics and their relation to jewelry. John also appeared on Syracuse's 95X to discuss jewelry and weddings.
JPHii DESIGN also started vending more frequently at local events, attempting to establish a foothold in Syracuse.

July 10th 2019

This month's Creative artist is Norðrislá Blacksmiths with Alyson A. Kaltak and her partner Christopher Paul Daniello. Alyson has great talents in all she does, and is a sister to me I'm proud to of met! I did an interview with her to really say what the business is about!! Please do check them out!!

About

Norðrislá is an all hand-crafted Norse smithy specializing in Scandinavian-style knives, camp ware, and jewelry among other commissioned products. (from their facebook page)

 Interview with Alyson A. Kaltak

1. Tell me a little about your business?

NorÄ‘rislá (pronounced Nord-ris-lah/North-ris-lah) is a home-operated blacksmithing business. We specialize in period-specific (namely Viking-era) weapons such as knives, axes, campware, and jewelry- some of which doubles as survival gear, such as flint-strikers. We also craft simple tools like nails, s-hooks, and varieties of small items that would have been everyday-use in those days.

2. How did you get started smelting?

My father was a blacksmith, so part of that inspiration always sat in the back of my mind and I always wanted to try it, but didn't quite have the chance to do it until after college. Smelting is a very cool process of melting down different kinds of metals into ingots (bars) or other molds. We do more blacksmithing, which is shaping steel/other metals into tools, but smelting is a fun and easy part of the routine.

3. What kind of stuff do you Black Smith?

I specialize in knives more than anything, and I hope to become proficient in war axes in time. They are much tougher than they look.

4. Can you make custom made if requested?

Absolutely! However, we can only take a few commissions at a time, because we do not have a huge power-tool setups like the popular TV shows.

5. What is your favorite part of creating?

Being able to channel creative energy and whatever other emotion into a piece. It's like meditating with fire and steel.

6. What piece was your hardest to make?

Ironically (no pun intended!), it's actually the very little and fine-detailed items that are toughest to master, because they take so much time-precision when being heated and shaped, leaving very little room for error. I remember having a really tough time shaping a Scandinavian flint-striker because of the fine design and curling that goes around the handle, as well as getting it perfectly even on both sides. Another nightmare piece was a fork! (Picture of Scandinavian Flint striker just below!)

7. What else creative do you like to do?

I like to resin-cast jewelry with herbs, flowers, and other sorts of pretty things. I'll be adding resin-cast, personalized knife-handles to some of our traditional designs, as well- this will give them a cool modern look. More than anything, I love coming up with concept designs and bringing them to life.

8. Where can we find your creations?

You can find us on Facebook, under Nordrisla and/or Brisingamen (newly-formed jewelry page, still under construction). We will have a website, and Etsy page up soon, as well.

9. Where is your next festival or where can one get your craft in person?

Our next festival will be out at the Windfall Dutch Barn Medieval/Renaissance Faire, out in Fort Plain, NY. (Aug. 10th and 11th) 2019.

10. Anything you'd like me to add that I didn't?

We get this question more than anything, so just to reiterate: We are not like the television show "Forged In Fire". The way we do our craft, there is little to no use of any power tools to speed anything along, so we love and appreciate all our friends, family, and fan-base for their support and patience. We might put up a YouTube Channel just to give everyone an inside look to what it means to be a "traditional" blacksmith, as opposed to modern work you might see on TV.

Thank you Alyson for your fine work! Can't wait to hear and see more from you in the near future!!

Joshua Davis Photography

FB_IMG_1585499455272.jpg

I'm proud to have known Joshua Davis for the last few years! A fellow behind the scenes bud and helped me through times starting my own magazine!  Thankful to have a friend like him! Simply an amazing photographer!  I'll be looking for him in Rolling Stone one day!

Around five years ago, his photography career started out with just doing family photos as practice and it eventually turned into more photos and weddings. he went on board with a local magazine, however they didn't click very well with him. He is currently shooting for Glide Magazine, which is a national publication based out of California and also NYS Music. As far as the future, hopefully Rolling Stone or tour photography for a major touring band.  "I got started when I was given a camera as a gift for my birthday so I could take pictures of my son. It was a little point and shoot, and I found I really enjoyed taking pictures. I ended up getting a little bit better camera and that's really when I started to have the passion grow. I saved all my money from doing family pictures and weddings and purchased my first full frame camera and high quality lens." As in earlier times no idea how far he could go, and the future brings even more. Music can bring out so much passion and creativity. We all really do have a connection in this business and a big family. I love how he can capture this with his images of the best parts of music. "The best part is obviously getting to go to all these shows and take pictures of all the different artists. Its a pretty unique experience as you get to go to areas most people never will be able to. The part I enjoy the most is taking a picture and then having the artist reach out to use it." It's always awesome to be able to work closely with the bands and artists. I know Joshua can agree you start feeling one with them and the amazing vibe you get being up close and personal. The moments you can never forget! "There are two concerts that really stick in my mind that are memorable. One was when I photographed Taylor Swift at MetLife Stadium with 80,000 people in attendance. It was pretty crazy walking down on the floor with so many people around, and the stage was absolutely insane. The other was when I photographed Metallica. I thought it was absolutely awesome to be able to shoot them as they're icons."

I'm excited and hopefully get to see a lot more of his work this summer.  I'm sure we'll be at the same concert at some point in time! Was great meeting him for the first time! Watching him work his creative juices. I can't wait to work with him in the near future with the magazine possibly. Thank you for all your help and your wise words! "Any advice to start would be just keep practicing. Eventually people will notice, especially with the way social media is. For shooting bigger acts, it's definitely important to have a solid portfolio and also an agency/publication to be shooting for. So just never give up." Please check his work out and get a photo shoot with him! So worth it!! \m/
